The babes, my musings, etc.

I just can't help but smile every time I look at him! These pictures were taken of the babes in his new outfit from Ellen, one of my clinical supervisors in graduate school. Ellen and I recently met up for dinner and caught up on the latest. Hours later, after talking "shop," family and interests, I returned home musing on the fact that a once-mentorship has become a lasting friendship. I thought on my years as a graduate student and how I spent hours watching every nuance of Ellen's skills as she conducted therapy. With almost three decades of experience, Ellen was, and is, a pro. I've heard her voice directing me many times; how to most effectively elicit a target sound, to assess a challenging kiddo, to use finesse in navigating professional relationships. Even now, when interacting with Justin I think of her calm manner and soft communication style.
Her teachings have become a part of me.
I then thought of recent legislation in California. One in particular about education that we, and many other people, fought with petitions --hoping for a referendum. Sadly, our petitions fell short. As of this new year, public education (K-12) will include instruction on alternative lifestyles -- under the guise of anti-bullying. Public school teachers will use their influence to teach young children about same-gender relationships and transgenderism.
In the wake of this, I thought of my babes and future babies (no announcement -- ha!). Without a doubt, Mike and I will work hard to be significant, positive influences in their lives. Parents do. But beyond that, I thought about the many other possible influences. And I silently prayed that they will be forces for good. Our kids will no doubt have their share of perhaps well-intentioned but misguided teachers. But thinking of the many "Ellens" waiting ahead, I can't help but smile.

  1. Well said sis. I have so many mentors that I look to as good examples and hope that my kids will too. I love the nickname "babes"... he fits it perfectly :)
